Brief

The vision of our client from the HealthTech industry was to bring their patients relief from postoperative pain with their innovative idea. The system enables modern methods of treating postoperative pain in hospital conditions after laparotomy and laparoscopy by means of transdermal stimulation of acupuncture points with the system of wireless electro-stimulators.

The system works by stimulating sensory receptors to release endogenous opioids, which then bind to opioid receptors. As a result, their activation causes an analgesic effect in the patient’s body.

The client asked us to create an application aimed at wireless, concurrent service, control, and configuration of medical devices using the Bluetooth Low Energy standard (up to 4 devices simultaneously!) used for transdermal therapeutic electrostimulation.

The challenge

The biggest challenge for us as software development providers was applying and managing the Bluetooth technology due to the specifics of the project and enabling medical devices to configure with the usage of the Bluetooth Low Energy standards. What is more, adjusting electrotherapy to the individual parameters of a given patient also wasn’t an easy task in this project.

After logging in, the doctor has complete control over the course of the patient’s treatment path and access to previous treatment history. After completing the data about the patient, information about possible contraindications, and the chosen treatment path, the application connects to the electro-stimulators on the patient's body via Bluetooth technology. The healing process begins!

Technological Solution

This project was based mostly on the Ruby language, with the usage of the Ruby on Rails framework for the backend side. Together with the client, we have decided that PostgreSQL will be responsible for data storage. The backup database was Redis, responsible for keeping the cache and the queue of tasks performed in the background. The point of interaction with the application was here, the REST API supported by the Rails application. The features that we implemented in the project were as follows:

  • Support for electro-stimulators that were printed on a 3D printer via Bluetooth,
  • Collecting feedback from the patient about their pain, worsening/improvement, well-being, etc.,
  • Adjusting electrotherapy to diseases and conditions, age and body of the patient,
  • Instructing the patient to put on the stimulators on a custom screen with a drawing of the body,
  • Planning long-term therapies and entering them into the patient’s calendar,
  • A simplified version of the application for patients. For doctors, the application allowed for any control of the stimulators’ parameters,
  • Reminding notifications about putting on a stimulator and providing feedback on the health condition.

The Outcome

As a result of our cooperation, we have created a mobile application for Android based on native technologies, using the Kotlin language.

We developed an intuitive admin panel enabling authorized persons to manual interference with the database. The person can get into the panel using the authentication system.

Both doctors and patients with access to the app can log in. After logging in, the doctor has complete control over the course of the patient’s treatment path and access to previous treatment history. Through the application, they can also decide whether they want to use the expert system’s hints or enter all the settings manually. After completing the data about the patient, information about possible contraindications, and the chosen treatment path, the application connects to the electro-stimulators on the patient’s body via Bluetooth technology. The healing process begins!
